Brugia malayi

Definition: A species of parasitic nematode causing Malayan filariasis and having a distribution centering roughly on the Malay peninsula. The life cycle of B. malayi is similar to that of WUCHERERIA BANCROFTI, except that in most areas the principal mosquito vectors belong to the genus Mansonia.  infection: coord IM with FILARIASIS (IM) or if with possible lymphatic involvement, ELEPHANTIASIS, FILARIAL (IM); coord with specific helminth term (ANTIGENS, HELMINTH, etc) if pertinent; /drug eff: consider FILARICIDES    Other names malayus, Brugia; malayi, Brugia; Brugia malayus
