Pneumocystis carinii

Definition: The prototype species of PNEUMOCYSTIS infecting the laboratory rat, Rattus norvegicus (RATS). It was formerly called Pneumocystis carinii f. sp. carinii. Other species of Pneumocystis can also infect rats.  do not confuse with the human form, Pneumocystis carinii f. sp. hominis (previously indexed with PNEUMOCYSTIS CARINII) now PNEUMOCYSTIS JIROVECII; infection: coordinate IM with probably PNEUMONIA, PNEUMOCYSTIS (IM) but if not of lungs, coordinate with PN    Other names carinus, Pneumocystis; carinius, Pneumocystis; carinii, Pneumocystis; carini, Pneumocystis; Pneumocystis carinus; Pneumocystis carinius; Pneumocystis carini
