Bacteriorhodopsins

Definition: Rhodopsins found in the PURPLE MEMBRANE of halophilic archaea such as HALOBACTERIUM HALOBIUM. Bacteriorhodopsins function as an energy transducers, converting light energy into electrochemical energy via PROTON PUMPS.  do not confuse with BACTERIAL RHODOPSINS see RHODOPSINS, MICROBIAL
