Valerian

Definition: A plant genus of the family VALERIANACEAE, order Dipsacales, subclass Asteridae, class Magnoliopsida. It is best known for the sedative use and valepotriate content of the roots. It is sometimes called Garden Heliotrope but is unrelated to true Heliotrope (HELIOTROPIUM).  do not confuse X ref HELIOTROPE, GARDEN with HELIOTROPIUM; coord with specific PLANT STRUCTURES term if pertinent; for use in therapy coord IM with PHYTOTHERAPY (IM) + disease/drug ther (IM) + PLANT PREPARATION or its indentations/ther use (IM or NIM) +     Other names Valeriana officinalis; Valeriana; Heliotrope, Garden; officinalis, Valeriana; officinali, Valeriana; Valerians; Valeriana officinali; Heliotropes, Garden; Garden Heliotropes; Garden Heliotrope; Valerianas
